Here’s a cool piece of trivia for your next Hunger Games contest: In the book The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen is first given the Mockingly pin from Madge, the mayor’s daughter. But in the movie, she’s given it by Greasy Sae, one of the people she trades with in District 12. Katniss then gives it to Prim for luck during the reaping…but when Prim’s name is called and Katniss volunteers for tribute in her place (cue all the tears), Prim returns it to her, hoping it will protect Katniss in the games (which, just to keep it real, the fact that Prim’s name was called while she was wearing it should mean that it obviously doesn’t have that great of luck). And just to make the drama even thicker, unknowingly to Katniss, the Mockingjay pin is a sign of rebellion against the Capitol, since mockingjays were created after a disastrous experiment with jabberjays. It becomes an even bigger thorn in President Snow’s side after Katniss continues to triumph in the Games against all odds, severely pissing off the powers that be. Which could have all ended in disaster, but if Katniss knows how to do anything, it’s rising up against the odds. Once the districts are inspired by her and begin to uprise? Girl started wearin’ that pin!
