Rimsky-Korsakov: The Golden Cockerel
Highlighted Features
Following celebrated productions of Prokofiev Semyon Kotko and Shchedrin The Left-Hander, Valery Gergiev continues his survey of uniquely Russian works with The Golden Cockerel, Rimsky-Korsakov's final and, arguably, most mysterious opera. This vibrant new production mixes live action with CGI, and is the vision of Anna Matison, an acclaimed playwright, script-writer, film director and producer. The Golden Cockerel was Matison's directorial debut with the Mariinsky, and saw her also take on the roles of production and costume designer. ''In selecting the genre of the fairy-tale,'' the stage director says, ''I do not intend to experiment with it as a genre. It is a family story: for children it is a merry and vivid tale; for parents it is a wise parable.'' The melodious nature, beauty and leitmotifs of teh plot are underscored by the production designs; the opera uses pantomime and masquerades, while the set utilized 3D video projections. For much of the twentieth century, Rimsky-Korsakov's operatic works was largely ignored in the west, and he was better-known for his editing of major works by Mussorgsky. A thoroughly Russian composer, his music derived much from his country's rich legacy of folk tales, and hi slush, exotic orchestration was a strong influence on his student Stravinsky. Completed in 1907, just after the Russo-Japanese war, the opera's depiction of a witless Tsar meant it was initially banned and Rimsky-Korsakov never saw it performed. Finally staged in 1909, it received its first performance at the Mariinsky in 1919. Based on text by Alexander Pushkin, with libretto by Vladimir Belsky, the opera begins with The Astrologer, who itnroduces himself as the director of teh story, a moral tale, througha fantastical kingdom. King Dodon, once a great warrior, is now old and tired. However, his sons have not inherited his talent for warfare and his kingdom is now under threat. To aid the King, the Astrologer ... Rimsky-Korsakov: The Golden Cockerel [Blu-ray]
Highlighted Features
The old Tzar Dodon, tired of ruling his country, manipulated by his political advisors - among which the obscure Astrologer - and showing little interest in protecting his kingdom against foreign agression, relies on a magic Golden Cockerel to warn him in case of an attack. But when the Cockerel tells him of his own defeat, the Tzar quickly falls in love with his enemy, the beautiful Tzaritza of Shemakha, who easily convinces him to surrender his empire by making him propose to her. A cruel and sardonic fairytale, Rimsky-Korsakov s Golden Cockerel draws from a poem by Alexander Pushkin, and undoubtedly counts among the most subversive works in the history of music. A very direct attack against autocracy, stupidity and political inertia, it was censored and premiered only in 1909, one year after Rimsky-Korsakov s death. This new production from the Theâtre de la Monnaie was imagined by Laurent Pelly. Drawing from the modernity of Rimsky-Korsakov s musical and dramatic imagination, the ambiguities of its specular structure, and its underlying reflection on language, manipulation and absurdity, the French stage director underlies the heavily symbolical aspects of this fierce and pitiless tale, all the while remembering both its historical context and its universal philosophical depth... French conductor Alain Altinoglu works wonders with the Theâtre de la Monnaie Symphonic Orchestra, and reaffirms his strong affinities with Russian music, which were already made clear in the Tchaikovsky dyptich Iolanta / The Nutcracker at the Paris Opera in 2015.

Love & Friendship (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Highlighted Features
About the MovieSet in the opulent drawing rooms of eighteenth-century English society, Love & Friendship focuses on the machinations of a beautiful widow, Lady Susan Vernon, who, while waiting for social chatter about a personal indiscretion to pass, takes up temporary residence at her in-laws estate. While there, the intelligent, flirtatious, and amusingly egotistical Lady Vernon is determined to be a matchmaker for her daughter Frederica and herself too, naturally. She enlists the assistance of her old friend Alicia, but two particularly handsome suitors complicate her orchestrations. Love & Friendship is based on the Jane Austen novella Lady Susan and stars Academy Award® nominee Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don t Cry, Big Love, American Psycho), Kate Beckinsale (Laurel Canyon, Pearl Harbor, Underworld franchise) and Xavier Samuel (Twilight: Eclipse, Fury). The movie opens in theaters nationwide on May 13, 2016. About the MusicThe music on the Love & Friendship soundtrack was recorded in August and September 2015 under the direction of Mark Suozzo. Jane Austen s story of Lady Susan Vernon and her amours was written between 1793 and 1805, but music from an earlier period seemed to better reflect the spirit of the movie. Handel, Purcell, Boyce Fremart, Mozart, Vivaldi and other composers of the Pantheon create the musical accompaniment to Lady Susan s world. Composer Benjamin Esdraffo wrote key additional tracks, including the title music, and Suozzo conducted the Irish Film Orchestra to record all of the music for the soundtrack. loveandfriendshipmovie.comsonymusicmasterworks.com
