The lights dim, the piano plays and the film projector clicks as the first title card appears on the screen. It's the silent film era--the three-decade period at the beginning of the 20th century that gave birth to the film industry, Hollywood and movie stars. The 5th in "David Wolfe's History of Hollywood Fashions" series celebrates six of our earliest stars--Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, Gloria Swanson, Clara Bow, Louise Brooks, and Greta Garbo--and costumes from their silent films. This super-sized volume provides 6 paper dolls on a cardstock centerfold and 10 pages of costumes for the silent screen stars, plus authoritative commentary by David Wolfe, the popular artist and Hollywood fashion historian.

The Better Ole
Highlighted Features
Like his younger half-brother Charlie, Syd Chaplin was also a successful silent-film comedian and enjoyed a certain notoriety somewhat oversahdowed by his iconic sibling. Here he plays Old Bill, a World War I army private with the British Expeditionary Forces. The film derives its title from a beloved British cartoon strip, hopping from the comics to celluloid in a funny scene where a soldier stuck in a muddy foxhole complains and Old Bill replies in Cockney, "If you knows a better 'ole, go for it!" The plot involves unmasking a traitor in the ranks who, allied with the owner of a local inn, is responsible for the town falling under German control. The most classic scene finds Bill and his buddy sneaking through enemy lines disguised as a horse. Superb slapstick silliness doesn't come any better.

Beau Brummel (1924)
Highlighted Features
Beau Brummel (John Barrymore) is a dandy, a ladies' man, a social-climbing commoner admitted to English royal circles. Lady Margery Alvanley (Mary Astor) adores him, but is forced to marry a richer man. Their doomed affair - and Brummel's fall into poverty and disgrace after a single unwise remark - forms the dramatic heart of this opulent 1924 silent classic. Barrymore, then at the peak of his screen power, personifies dash and brio. Astor, poised to become one of film's finest actresses, is achingly lovely. But it is more than talent and beauty that sets their love scenes aflame. The stars' torrid off-screen romance imbues their on-screen relationship with authentic, timeless passion.
