Most grown-ups didn’t quite know what to think of the Garbage Pail Kids, from the teachers who banned the cards in school to whoever was responsible for the movie. And though we can see in hindsight how some of the drawings might have gotten some pretty strong reactions from confused parents, there’s still something bafflingly charming about the gross-out parody card series.

Just look at Ali Gator. He seems so happy on the shore of the lake, pulling out fistfuls of fish for supper. If he didn’t have that scaly snout, it would look like he just loved the great outdoors like anybody else. And since he does have that toothy grin, what’s the problem with his putting it to good use? Grown-ups are so silly sometimes. Well, now you’re an adult too, for better or worse.
