Adult Dragon Lady Geisha Costume

If we had taken a break from designing cool-looking Halloween costumes to catch up on our non-fiction reading list a little sooner, we would be way more familiar with the fascinating history of the Japanese Geisha. Certain parts were different from how the Geisha seemed in a lot of movies, since the filmmakers focused on their flashy outfits, striking pale makeup, and almost mythical popularity. That’s kind of where we think they got the inspiration for this stylized Adult Dragon Lady Geisha Costume.

It’s a little like certain depictions of our culture here in the US of A have confused the exact details of the real story. One patriotic song from a couple centuries ago tells about a certain Mr. Doodle whose dandy sense of style inspired him to wear cheesy pasta on top of his hat. But Mr. Doodle wouldn’t have even known about cheesy pasta until Thomas Jefferson made it popular after returning from Europe, years after the song had already become famous. Who knew!

Well, we’re still a little fuzzy on some of the details, but it sounds like the Geisha basically made a living by being some of the best-educated and classiest people in their society, and they were a major influence on the arts. We still think you’d look great wearing this bright, fanciful dragon kimono. But it seems like a Kabuki mask might make a pretty neat accessory given the Geisha’s contributions to the development of the theater. Just a thought!
