Life was hard in ancient Rome. You could hardly wake up in the morning without seeing some kind of bird or hulking half-beast that the soothsayers would claim was a sign about the future. Maybe that’s why the Latin word monere evolved into the modern English word ‘monster.’

Monere means ‘to warn,’ which makes sense, because usually when a scary monster appears, we start making dire predictions. “Watch out!” we yell. “Something terrible is about to happen!” Then again, we act the same way when good things are going on, like when somebody decides to share their extra Halloween candy. “Hurry up!” we exclaim. “The best chocolate is almost gone!”

Most of the time, we see Purple and Blue Tutus in fun monster costumes—the kind that makes us want to shout, “Wow! That’s a really great outfit!” But there’s no rule against making it part of a different kind of monster costume, either. There isn’t even a rule saying that this tutu has to be part of a monster costume at all! It will add a splash of color to any getup.
