“I have never found a pair of tights I loved like that again. They don’t do them anymore. Or if they do, they don’t make them for grown women.”“Strange, that,”“Oh, you can mock. Didn’t you ever love anything that much?”
Look, we know you’re probably not expecting to shed a tear over a description about Kids Bumblebee Tights, but get ready, parents, because here we go!
In the book “Me Before You” by JoJo Moyes (recently adapted for the big-screen, starring Emilia Clark and Sam Claflin), Louisa, a quirky, cheerful young woman searching for her place in life, tells her current charge, the handsome Will – a formerly active and overachieving man who has since been paralyzed by a motorcycle accident – that when Lou was three, she had a pair of bumblebee tights that she loved more than any other item of clothing. For her, in childhood, these tights became a symbol of Lou choosing to do things for herself, because, though no one else liked the tights, Lou stubbornly wore them all the time as a little girl because they made her happy. Similarly, Lou cannot continue to make choices about her future based on what other people think is best for her. Though Will laughs at the story at the time, later on, Will gives Lou a new pair of bumblebee tights for her 27th birthday, effectively showing her that he understands her and effectively giving her license to make decisions herself and herself alone, no matter what anyone else in her life thinks. The story ends (no spoilers! But if you know how it ends, feel free to grab some tissues, because we’re about to come in hot with all The Feels) with Will telling her to “Push yourself. Don’t settle. Wear those stripey legs with pride.”
We mean…RIGHT?! Who knew that a pair of Kids Bumblebee Tights could incur so much amazing and powerful emotion? If your own sweet girl has a mind of her own and an adorable, quirky style that sets her apart, then we highly recommend encouraging that independent, heroine-esque spirit by giving her these black and yellow striped tights! Let her wear them as a part of a costume or, if they make her as happy as Lou, as a part of her favorite every-day outfit!
