Mittens of Latvia: 178 Traditional Designs to Knit
Highlighted Features
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE BOOK "LATVIESA CIMDI": "MITTENS OF LATVIA: 178 Traditional Designs to Knit" - 178 unique and beautiful patterns collected in a high quality design book. Author: Ethnographer Maruta Grasmane Genre: Handbook Format: Hard cover Publisher: "Senā Klēts" ("The Old Granary") Published: 2015; Language: English, Dimensions: 28,5 x 16 cm (11" x 6") The book presents 178 samples of mittens, reproduced from the 18th Century originals in Latvian museum collections, their knitting secrets and wearing traditions. Although there have been publications before concerning Latvian ethnographic mittens, the book "Mittens of Latvia. 178 Traditional Designs to Knit" provides the most complete and exact information. Moreover it is a visually magnificent book which tells us the story about Latvian traditional culture through bright and inspiring photos. The book is a perfectly designed trustworthy historical encyclopaedia. At the same time it is also a practical treatise encouraging knitters to carry on ancient traditions with original and exciting patterns. The left hand page presents the pattern, the right hand one shows a knitted mitten for better visual perception of the pattern. Every sample of a mitten carries with it the precise historical information about the location where it comes from, the museum where the original can be found and its inventory number. Every pattern presented by the book is unique, but they still all have roots in the cradle of Indo-European culture and it is easy to see resemblances with ethnographic sign systems in many other traditional cultures.

Wearable Prints, 1760-1860: History, Materials, and Mechanics
Highlighted Features
Wearable prints are not only a decorative art form but also the product of a range of complex industrial processes and an economically important commodity. But when did textile printing originate, and how can we identify the fabrics, inks, dyes, and printing processes used on surviving historical examples? In Wearable Prints, 1760 1860 (winner of 5 awards, see below), author Susan Greene surveys the history of wearable printed fabrics, which reaches back into the earliest days of the discovery of the delights of selectively patterned cloth and is firmly interwoven with the Industrial Revolution. The bulk of the book is devoted to the process of printing and dyeing. Greene brings together evidence from period publications and manuscripts, extant period garments and quilts, and scholarship on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century chemistry and technology. Making the text come alive, Greene includes some 1600 full-color images, including a plentiful array of textile samples. Wearable Prints, 1760-1860 is a convenient encyclopedic guide, written in plain language accessible to even the most casual reader. Historians, students, costumers, quilters, designers, curators, and collectors will find it an essential resource. Wearable Prints has won the Eugene S. Ferguson Prize for 2017 from the Society for the History of Technology and the Millia Davenport Publication Award for 2015 from the Costume Society of America.Kent State University Press has won the 2015 PROSE award in the category of Single Volume/Humanities and Social Sciences for excellence in publishing--with Wearable Prints 1760-1860; also the 2015 Benjamin Franklin Silver Award in History from the Independent Book Publishers' Association, and the 2014 Indiefab Gold Award in Reference from the Foreword Review.

Lucia Morning in Sweden
Highlighted Features
In the busy house of the Svennson family, everyone is getting ready for the Swedish holiday of Lucia Day, December 13. The book tells the story of Santa Lucia through the eyes of three children in modern-day Sweden. It describes their giddy activities, brought to life in colorful, full-page illustrations, and also provides sheet music, recipes, and sewing patterns for the costumes traditionally worn by children on this day, when many Swedish people celebrate the legacy of Lucia and the coming of the light with coffee, saffron buns, ginger snaps, and wonderful singing. One of the most beloved and celebrated traditions of the Swedish people, Lucia Day also signifies that the Christmas holiday is getting close. Although the book is aimed at the 5- to 10-year-old age group, many parents and grandparents may enjoy reading it to younger children.
