Authentic Victorian Dressmaking Techniques
Highlighted Features
At the turn of the century, ladies of privilege could easily afford their own dressmakers, and even middle-class housewives occasionally employed competent seamstresses. But many women did their own sewing, often relying on Dressmaking, Up to Date, a how-to book published by the Butterick Publishing Company. First published in 1905 and widely considered the first modern American sewing book, this extremely rare volume is published here complete and unabridged. This Butterick manual provides clear and concise instructions for altering patterns, hand-sewing stitches, and creating shirt-blouses, skirts, wedding and evening gowns, coats, jackets, maternity wear, undergarments, bathrobes, children's clothing, and many other articles of apparel. Today's costume historians and sewing enthusiasts will find fascinating instruction in such long-lost arts as boning a bodice perfectly, creating skirt sweepers and bust enhancers, concealing hooks and eyes, and other vintage dressmaking techniques. An indispensable archive of information on late-Victorian and turn-of-the-century clothing, this volume will be of immense interest to anyone fascinated by the fashion and costume of the period. It will also be of value to needleworkers wanting to create accurate reproductions of Victorian-era costume, or to anyone interested in applying time-honored sewing techniques to a modern wardrobe.

Kolberg: The Restored 1945 Epic Directed by Veit Harlan (2019 Release Issue) (DVD)

- Subtitled in English
Remastered in HD with Switchable English or Spanish Subtitles Filmed over late 1943 and 1944, Kolberg drew upon the historical resistance of East Prussian townsmen against Napoleon in 1807 in arguing its case for total war against the Allies. Its bone-jarring climax, showing Kolberg bombarded into rubble and flames by French artillery fire, unmistakably evokes Allied bombing raids across Germany at the time. Even as the Nazi regime was entering its last phases, it devoted lavish resources to staging Kolberg s spectacular battle scenes, detonating tons of explosives and diverting thousands of Wehrmacht soldiers from the front. Released amidst the chaos of early 1945, Kolberg was shown in a handful of Germany s still intact movie houses; today this apotheosis of the Nazi cinema survives as National Socialism s final statement to posterity. This new DVD edition represents a vast improvement over previous existing versions, featuring improved subtitles, restored sound and a painstaking restoration of the original Agfacolor in all its temperamental glory. Directed by Veit Harlan. Starring Heinrich George, Kristina Söderbaum and Horst Caspar. Music by Norbert Schultze. Germany, 1945, Color, 104 min., switchable (Optional) English or Spanish subtitles. SPECIAL FEATURES: · Scene Selections · Historical Background Autoplay Slideshow · Goebbels 1943 Total War Speech Newsreel · Actors Biographies · Digitally Restored and Remastered · Electronic Essay Booklet "Kolberg:The Apotheosis of Nazi Cinema" · Optional English or Spanish Subtitles

Bizet: Les Pêcheurs de perles (DVD)
Highlighted Features
“Ms.Damraubrings brilliant coloratura agility, radiant sound and charisma galore to the role of Leila … Mr. Noseda conducts as if every moment of the music matters deeply.” –The New York Times Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de perles, set in Sri Lanka, is known above all for its unforgettable duet for tenor and baritone, but it its score is full of delightful and dramatic music. When recently staged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York it proved a major success, both for the production by Penny Woolcock and the musical performance, conducted by Paolo Noseda, with Diana Damrau as the priestess Leïla and, as the two men competing for love, the tenor Matthew Polenzani (Nadir) and the baritone Mariusz Kwiecien (Zurga). Woolcock’s concept brought the production up to date, with photographic and video references to the 2004 tsunami, and offered a superb ‘aquatic’ spectacle during the overture: the whole stage appeared to be beneath the Indian Ocean and acrobatic divers ‘swam’ down from the surface (located in the flies of the theatre).
