When most people think of animals who look graceful in flight, they tend toward soaring eagles or swooping cranes or fluttering butterflies. The humble bat is probably not too high on the grace charts. It’s true that bats have something of a strange method of flight. There’s a lot of flapping involved, and they tend to zigzag back and forth with very little design. Plus there’s also the creepiness factor. A lot of people can’t see the beauty in a bat because they’re just plain scared of them.

But we think that’s a little unfair. A bat in flight is a beautiful thing, especially when you consider that they can’t really see where they’re going. Bats make their movements by following the echoes of their own screeches, and they do a remarkably good job of navigating where they need to go. Any animal that can track down a mosquito in flight using only the power of sound is all right in our books. And if you really take the time to watch a swarm of bats, their swoops and flutters even begin to look like a wild, intricate dance.

If your kid is the type who finds beauty in places that are less likely (and maybe even a little spooky), you can’t beat this bold batarina costume (that’s a bat ballerina, if you hadn’t sorted that out). The polyester pullover dress features tulle shoulder ruffles and a purple bodice inset, with an elastic waist tutu skirt crafted from layers of black and purple tulle. A set of tulle wings stretched over wire frames fit easily across the shoulders with elastic straps. For added flourish, there’s a headband with stuffed velvet bat ears and a pair of velvet glovelettes trimmed with purple ribbon. A couple of twirls around the dance floor and there will be no doubt that this little bat is the most graceful creature in the room.
